about

the LONG of it:
'Songs About Girls' is a semi-autobiographical album curtailing the usual externalization of pain and abstract prose (that is the norm for Jay Sharp) and cleverly dishes up some subjective observation. Based on poems from one of his "little black books" from the Winter of 2010; the primary bulk of the music was written over the course of a three day period in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. The record focuses on a diverse array of subjects; from the demure: a girl working the late-night shift in a Checkers fast-food restaurant "the Saddest Girl in Brooklyn, New York", to the wild life of "the Fastest Bartender in Greenpoint New York" (An Asian girl who worked at Coco 66) Unlike Sharp's other works this album focuses on the acoustic sounds of pianos and synths in a lo-fi manner not unlike the musical solo-project of musician Owen Ashworth (Best known for his work as 'Casiotone for the Painfully Alone'). Ashworth's music was characterized by the use of electronically produced beats, cheap keyboards, and slow, frank lyrics. While those elements all appear on 'Songs About Girls' there are also samples and sparse guitar- but they do not paint the full sonic landscape.

Under the guise of "Elijah Should" (with guitars and a live-band sound taking a backseat) Sharp is able to communicate both the confessional and cerebral to great emotional effect. An album sure to be known as an exploit of his sexual conquests, wants and failings from his College years through now; what will soon be known as his 30s.

the SHORT of it:
Elijah Should - Songs About Girls is a concept album. . . about girls.
